Staff Accountant

The job in one paragraph

This is the person who owns the money coming in. You post the payments that hit each day, make sure every dollar lands on the right customer account and the right invoice, chase the balances that have gone past due, and pick up the phone when a customer has a question about a bill. At month end, year end and audit time, you pull the schedules the accounting team needs to close the books.

What you would actually be doing

• Posting daily payments. Lockbox, ACH and wire, keyed accurately and on the day they arrive.
• Applying cash. Matching payments to the correct customer accounts and open invoices, and resolving the ones that do not match cleanly.
• Working the aging. Following up on past due accounts before they turn into write offs.
• Talking to customers. Answering billing and invoice questions directly, in a normal, professional way.
• Maintaining customer portals. Several customers require invoices to be submitted and tracked through their own systems. You keep those current.
• Supporting the close. Reconciliations, journal entries and the schedules that month end, year end and the annual audit require.

What you need to be considered

• Comfort working with numbers, and the habit of catching your own mistakes before someone else does.
• Willingness to call a customer about an unpaid invoice. This is a real part of the job, not an occasional one.
• Working knowledge of Excel.
• Reliable attendance for an on site, daytime schedule.

What moves you up the list

None of this is required. It is what will make the employer want to interview you sooner.

• Accounts receivable work of any kind. Cash application, billing, invoicing or collections.
• General accounting exposure. Journal entries, general ledger, reconciliations, close support, audit schedules, or accounts payable.
• ERP experience. Microsoft Dynamics NAV, Navision or Business Central counts for the most here because it is close to what the employer runs. SAP, Oracle, Sage and QuickBooks all count too.
• A track record of staying put. This employer is hiring for the long run and looks at tenure.
• An Erie or Niagara County commute. The role is on site five days a week, so a realistic drive matters.
